The holidays are coming, and Christmas is just around the corner. People can hear Christmas songs everywhere, as families prepare to gather together. During this festive season, our CISB choir and band clubs are busy! Their wonderful performances have been impressiving our Beijing community for weeks now. In this CISBe In The Know, we’d like to share the performances of our Choir (in part 1) and Band club (in part 2), and hope everyone enjoys their music, and have a very happy holiday!

C: I teach MYP and DP music courses as well as working with junior and senior choir after school. MYP music classes cover from instruments of the orchestra, the history of Rock’n’Roll, World music and Blues and Jazz music. For DP music course, we do music theory, history, world music, composition and all other required items from IB.
在CISB,我是教MYP和DP的音乐老师,同时也是担任小学及初高中课外课合唱团的工作。MYP音乐课的内容包括管弦乐的乐器、摇滚乐的音乐历史、世界音乐历史、蓝调和爵士乐等多种课程。对于DP的学生,我们主要是以音乐理论、世界音乐历史、作曲等,IB所要求的课程进行授课。
The most interesting and interactive activities in music class is performance. Students choose the instruments they play or the ukulele to form a band to play the music pieces that are based on the units. They love to improvise on the instruments as well.
在课堂上,最有趣的活动/互动是学生们进行表演。他们会选择自己感兴趣的乐器去演奏或者是尤克里里,组成一个乐队。然后一起进行不同主题的表演,学生很喜欢这种即兴表演的上课形式。

C: The CISB choir is formed by students from Gr. 2 to Gr. 8. There are about 45 members so far. Our regular rehearsal time is on Wednesday from 3:45 to 4:45. Every year the choir attends Christmas tree lighting ceremonies in the community as well as the winter and summer concerts. Last year, we got involved in the video-making program for the CISB Charity Ball event, and I think we’ll participate in the same event this year.

Q: How many performances does the club have in a year?

C: We have about 4-5 Christmas related performances every year. Our favorite is the Charity Bazaar event held in CISB because CISB is our home and we’d love to contribute to such a meaningful activity to raise money to help others.
每年的圣诞前夕,都是我们合唱团最忙碌的时刻。我们大约会有4-5场与圣诞节有关的演出。我和学生们都喜欢参加的是由我校CISB举办的冬季慈善义卖活动,因为CISB是我们的家,我们很乐意参与这样有意义的筹款活动去帮助需要帮助的人。
Q: What's your favorite choir performance?

C: The Charity Bazaar event held in our school, beside the reason above, almost all the choir parents can come to watch their child’s performance that is an exciting moment for both the choir members and their families.
我最喜欢的演出还是在CISB的冬季义卖活动,除了我刚提到的原因之外。还有一个原因是,几乎所有合唱团的学生家长都可以来观看孩他们子的表演,这对学生们和家人们来说都是非常激动人心的时刻。
Q: If students want to join in the club,
do you have any requirements for them?

C: Yes, students need to pass an audition to get in this club. The audition happens at the beginning of the school year before all the ASA starts. At the audition, choir candidates need to sing a song, imitate pitches and rhythms demonstrated by the teacher.
是的,学生需要通过一个基本的考核才能进入合唱团。我们的面试会在所有课外课前开始。在考核当中,参加的候选人需要准备一首歌,然后进行模仿老师的音高和节奏。

Q: What subject(s) do you teach at CISB?

A: I teach General Music Grades 3-5 and the school’s after school instrumental ensemble, more popularly known as the CISB BAND.

Q: What does a typical music class look like?
Q: 音乐课程都包括什么呢?
A: The general music classes focus on two major strands: Creating and Responding to music. Creating includes reading music, composing, improvisation, performing on instruments and singing songs. Responding covers describing music, understanding music in its context, listening to different genres and styles of music, and movement. The students explore these two strands while learning about the different musical elements: Rhythm, Dynamics, Melody, Harmony, Tone Color, Texture and Form.

Likewise, we offer basic instrument instruction on a variety of musical instruments. The grade three classes focus on the boomwhackers, recorders and barred instruments. Grades 4-5 have recorders, barred instruments and this year they will learn how to play the Ukulele.

Here in CISB, we have music lessons that integrate technology. In light of keeping our students current, we talk about how technology shapes the landscape of the music industry, and how innovations affect the way people create, store and share music over time. The software and applications used in the students’ creative process are Garageband, Musescore, Incredibox, Drummachine and iMovie to name a few.

We let the students experience and understand musical concepts through a variety of ways. They listen, sing, move, play instruments, compose and improvise. We recognize that different students have different ways of knowing and understanding, that is why we make learning as interactive and as accessible to all types of learners.

A: Membership is open to all instrumentalists who wish to extend their knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of music by playing in a large ensemble. Attention is focused on introductory music fundamentals, and acquisition of performance and rehearsal skills through exposure to a variety of literature from classical to pop.
At the beginning of the school year, students sign up for auditions. Students are assessed based on instrument technique, sight-reading and music theory. Consequently, the information from the assessment determines the repertoire of our performances.
The band club regularly performs in the Elementary and Middle High School Winter Concerts, Year-End Assemblies and Graduation Ceremonies. Regular whole group rehearsals are at the CISB Auditorium on Thursdays from 3:40-4:40PM. Additional after school or sectional rehearsals may be required prior to each performance.

Q: How many members do you have and
what instruments are represented in the ensemble?

A: The number of students in the club and instrumentation vary from year to year. This year, we have a total of 25 students from grades 3-11. They make up our flute, strings and percussion sections.
我们乐队学生人数和演奏的乐器种类每年都有所不同。像今年是由25位来自G3-G11年级的学生,组成了乐队的木管、弦乐和打击乐组。
Q: What's your favorite performance/song? Why?
Q: 你最喜欢的演出是什么?理由呢?
A: It’s hard to choose one. Every performance is always a milestone for the children. At the beginning of the season, when the students (especially the newbies) receive the band parts, they feel overwhelmed and often think that they cannot deliver.
Over time, they gradually develop confidence and a few days before the show, their fears disappear and are replaced with excitement, confidence and a sense of accomplishment. This is when they realize that they can achieve much more that what they have imagined. That right there is my magical moment. This part of the process is always my favorite.
这个问题挺选择的。因为每场演出对孩子们来说都是一不同的经历。从开始排练新曲目,当学生们(尤其是新手)收到自己乐组的部分,他们会感到不知所措,可能认为自己不能很好的完成曲目。
随着不断的练习,学生们变的更加自信。在演出前几天,他们的自信心、对演出的期待和成就感,完全取代了心中的紧张感。学生们自己能感受到这些的变化,因为他们做的比预期中的还要好。作为老师,这就是我“魔力”的时刻,鼓励他们,变得更好。这个过程一直是我最喜欢的部分。

do you have any requirements for students?
Q: 若学生想进入乐队,有什么样的要求?
A: Students who are interested in band should have their own instrument, must at least have basic understanding of music notation and basic playing technique on their chosen instrument.
But over and above the technical skills, we seek students who are teachable, eager to develop their talents, who love making music and enjoy working with others.
对乐队感兴趣的学生,如果你有自己的演奏乐器,并且知道所弹奏乐器的基本乐谱知识和基本的演奏技巧。除了演奏技巧之外,我们希望你是热爱音乐,想发展提高自己才能和有团队精神的。我们期待你加入!
Q: What are the benefits of joining the club?

A: The CISB Band is a venue for young musicians to share their talents with like-minded individuals and with an audience. There is so much talent in this school and the BAND is a place where we can cultivate their musicianship and ensemble playing skills. In band, we learn more than just musical competencies. We learn organizational skills, respect, discipline, perseverance, commitment and camaraderie. We build relationships, learn how to look after each other and make people happy through our music.
对于年轻的音乐学者来讲,CISB是一个可以展现他们才能的舞台。在这里,学生们不仅可以找到在音乐上志同道合的朋友,还可以通过音乐和观众进行交流。在我校,学生们有着自己擅长的领域和天赋。通过参加学校的乐队活动,他们可以培养自己的音乐才能的同时,也能提高了演奏技巧。除此之外,学生们还可以提高组织技能、学会尊重、坚持、承诺、友爱等。学生和老师之间紧密合作,相互交流沟通;在排练期间,学习互相照顾。最重要的是,我们希望乐队的音乐能给听众带来快乐。
